Blackheads: understand them to treat them better

A blackhead is a pore clogged with sebum and dead skin cells. When it is exposed to air, this mix oxidizes and turns dark. Blackheads mostly appear on the nose, chin and forehead, where the skin produces the most sebum.

Scrubbing won't make them go away. The answer is a consistent routine that cleanses the skin, exfoliates inside the pores and regulates sebum.

Ingredients that help

• Salicylic acid (BHA): it gets into sebum and unclogs pores.
• Niacinamide: it helps regulate sebum and refine the look of pores.
• Clays and kaolin: they absorb excess sebum.

Which skin types?

These products are aimed at oily and combination skin, but any skin can get blackheads on the T-zone. If you have sensitive skin, choose gentle formulas and use an exfoliant two or three times a week.

Blackhead routine

At night, double cleanse: a cleansing oil, then a gentle cleanser. Then apply a BHA exfoliant, a few nights a week at first. Finish with a light moisturizer. Once or twice a week, add a clay mask. In the morning, apply sunscreen.

Precautions

Don't squeeze blackheads: you risk marks and irritation. Don't use several exfoliants on the same night. If your skin feels tight, use the BHA less often and add more hydration.
